My Own Book Challenge

My parents were here last weekend. We were in Costco when I was browsing in the book section and told my parents how I was addicted to books. My dad said, "I know. You have books all over the house. You'll never read them all." Well now all I want to do is prove him wrong (even at 35 years old I want to do exactly what he tells me I can't do). I haven't really joined many challenges this year so I'm going to start my own challenge--read my own books as much as possible. Hmm...I think I'll challenge myself to read 25 by the end of the year. That will put a decent dent in my stacks and then maybe I can finish reading all my books by the end of the 2010. I feel good about that. I will have to put this off for a little longer because I have a couple of books from the library right now that I've waited months for so I don't want to get back on the waiting list.

I don't know why, but I always feel like it's a waste of time to read a book twice. Consciously, I know that's ridiculous- it's a pleasure to enjoy a good book over again, but there's some part of me that thinks, "Yeah, but you could be using this time to open up your mind to something completely different..." Dumb, I know. I think I'll modify this challenge to simply make myself read something that I own that I've already read. I'll try to make it something deep and meaningful so that maybe I can get more out of it the second time around and not feel like it's a waste of time. ;-)

I think it's a great challenge! I have several books sitting around here that I still haven't read. So I want to finish those, but I also want to get rid of the books I know I will never want to read again. Of course, the fact that that will make room for NEW books is totally coincidental. Really.

I will probably not read many of the books that I own a second time either, but for some reason I have a hard time getting rid of them. I like knowing that I can read them again if the mood strikes me. Once I'm done with this challenge I'll have to give myself another challenge to part with the books that I know I won't read twice. :)

I know exactly what you mean! I own way to many books to ever read them all in a normal time frame. BUT did you know there is a "read your own books" challenge? I'm doing it this year. Details: http://readingwise.wordpress.com/ryob-2009/

Question - When you say 25 books this year, are you talking about books you own but have never read yet or books you own and have read before and intend to read again? I was thinking books you haven't read but now I'm confused. I think I need to do this challenge too because I have several books that I bought a DI and I have never read them. There's sooooo much I want to read and soooo little time.
I love your blog!

Sorry, I got distracted in the middle of typing up my comment and you answered my question in the mean time.

I know, I so need to read what I own. And not just the brand new stuff that I'm reading right as I get 'cause I'm excited to get it, but the stuff I've had forever... packed and moved multiple times... that stuff!

Dearest Kim,
Eventhough I said addicted I could have said obsessed. I wish I could accept your challenge but I am way too busy, playing golf and raquetball, to give the time that it requires to read 25 books in the rest of the year. You realize that is 4 books a month or one a week. Just think of all the golf I would be missing out on.

How funny is your Dad?? LOL. I think all of us book bloggers can relate to your "problem." I have hundreds of books on my shelves I haven't read yet, but I still buy books, check them out of the library, and request them from publishers. It's an addiction! Good luck with your challenge (and proving your dad wrong).

I only keep books that I loved so much the first time that I WANT to read them again. The rest I donate to the library. (They give me credit for overdue fines- it's a good deal for everyone.) As for reading all the other books around the house that I haven't yet had the pleasure- count me in! Thanks for this challenge, Kim.

Good for you. I want to read a lot of books too, but I spend too much time on the computer. The internet is both a blessing and a curse.
