The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown

Category: Thriller, Mystery, Fiction
Published: 2009
Audiobook

Review: 3/5 stars

Dan Brown is finally back with a new book and I'm curious to see how many people will be disappointed. I listened to this on cds and I'm glad I did because I think I would have had a hard time getting through it otherwise. It wasn't bad, it just didn't captivate me like The Da Vinci Code did. I was into the 5th of 14 cds when I realized I was pretty bored so far. That is not what I expected. Also unexpectedly, Robert Langdon kind of got on my nerves. His scepticism was just too much for me.

Rating: 1.4.3 Includes the kind of violence you would expect in this genre. Scattered profanity but no f-bombs.

I haven't heard many positive reviews for this book. I'll probably skip it.

Just curious if you have read any of his other books? Deception Point, Digital Fortress?

We're actually looking forward to this one, but I guess we won't really know until we read it.

I think Dan Brown peaked with The Da Vinci Code. His writing never was very good but he managed to craft a decent thriller with the Da Vinci code that he was unable to do with his other books, including this one. It bored me too and I hated all the cliff hangers at the end of every single chapter.

Finished this one last week and yeah it was okay. I didn't love it. It took me awhile to get into. I'm with you though, i was really getting annoyed at the skepticism. After all that he has done and seen he can't believe that there are some old book buried under Washington? I'm sure it will turn into a great movie though!

Have you ever read anything by Peter Matthiessen. I was told to read Shadow Country but i don't know how clean his books are. Thanks!

Shelley--I don't think you'd be missing out on much.

Wendy--I have read Deception Point and it was pretty good. Probably a little better than this one.

Jeanette--I know what you mean about the cliffhangers at the end of the chapters. Annoying.

Kate--I'm afraid I haven't heard of Peter Matthiessen. I'll see if I can look into it.

Langdon's scepticism was really annoying. I also found this one totally predictable. I'll admit that I didn't figure out the very last masonic secret or how to solve the puzzles, but most of the other big reveals were so obvious to me. It was rather disappointing.

Does the constant overwhelm of gratuitous violence, only repulse me. If I had the book in hand, I would have skipped to the end out of curiousity, listening to it on my iPod, I could not do that but just tried to tune out the unrelenting violence that was clever but not essential.

KT-It's only been a month and I can't quite remember what the last masonic secret was. That shows how underwhelming this book was for me.

Anonymous-I appreciate your thoughts on the violence of this book. It is pretty awful but I guess I wasn't really surprised by it since the violence in Da Vinci Code was also pretty bad.
